Speed Camera and Red light Data: Garmin
Getting Started
Before you can load the speed Camera and red light camera data onto the
garmin navigation device you will need the following:
A PC with a spare USB port
The Garmin POI Loader installed
The Garmin gps device
The supplied USB cable
The Redlight and Speed camera data
Step 1
Installing the Garmin POI Loader
The Garmin POI Loader application is available for free from the
Garmin Website. To get the latest version of this software you
will need to download it from the Garmin Website at
http://www.garmin.com/products/poiloader/
( just hit above link or copy and paste this link )
The download is about 10Mb in size and will take a while to download on a
modem connection, or a few minutes on a broadband connection.
When requested you can either download the POI Loader and
install it from where you saved it or you can download it to a
temporary area and run it immediately.
Simply follow the onscreen instructions to install the application
and in a few moments you will have the Garmin POI Loader
installed and ready to use.
Step 2
Installing the speed camera and redlight camera data
Save all the data and icons I just emailed to you in a folder you make
up eg ( Garmin GPS data) (all data must be in the same folder or it will not work)
on your desktop.
Make sure unit is turned off then Connect the Garmin unit to the PC with the USB lead.
Now turn unit back on.
As soon as you plug the USB cable in the Garmin unit, it should
turn itself on ( if not turn it on now) and the PC may automatically launch
the Garmin POI Loader application. If POI Loader does not start automatically then
just start it from your programs menu.
Click Next to move to the main application screen.
now you should see your Garmin device on the list
If it does not come up automatically in find device you will need to press this button
and select it from a list.
( if windows does not find it it will ask you if it can load some
software automatically, agree and let it.) then click next.
From the main application screen click on the browse button and
navigate to the ( Garmin GPS data ) folder on your computer. Once you
have found the correct folder press ok. Now select Metres and KPH.
leave the third window on Express (recommended). click next.
This will start the download and conversion process.
On manual Click next for Redlight .csv,
then click next for speedcamera.csv,
now It will take only a few seconds
to download the whole data. Now click Finsh. When that is complete the Garmin will reboot.
( unit must reboot for data to take affect,
if it does not reboot turn it off then back on again.)
You are now ready to use with all the speed Camera and Redlight camera data loaded
with default warnings configured.
If the default warnings are not what you want then you can select
Manual instead of Express and configure each file in the folder
individually. Consult the help file in POI Loader for more details.
(PS it you stuff it up and it wont work now just reload in the Express mode)
Every time you load it, it will over write whats there. If you have any other POIs
to load save them in the same folder and load all at once or it will not work
Look at FAQ.
PS Make sure you have the Proximity Alarm on, on your device
( It is on as default in your system folder in your Garmin )
or you will see or hear any thing.
POI Loader FAQs
Q. Where do I put the CSV files so POI Loader will load them?
A. Place all the POI CSV files into one folder on your computer.
The POI Loader will prompt the user to show the program where the files
are located on the computer. Having all files in one folder will make
this process much easier.
Q. What is the required format for the data files?
A. The Garmin POI Uploader will upload POI files in a
CSV (comma separated value) file.
Q. What format should the bitmap files be?
A. Though almost any BMP file is supported, the best size for the
bitmap files is 16 X 16 bit BMP file.
Q. How many POIs can I fit into my unit?
A. There is no set limit on how many POIs can be loaded into the Garmin device.
This depends on the size of the POI files and the space available for POIs.
The size of the loaded POIs will depend on the amount of text included with
each POI and the size of any included bitmaps. Since POIs can be loaded into
internal memory or onto SD cards, the space available will vary widely.
Typically, the user should be able to fit more than 3000 POIs onto a unit.
If the available space is exceeded, POI Loader will tell the user how much
space is available in the device and how much space would be required to fit
all the POIs that were chosen.
Q. Can I load more than one CSV file of POI’s onto the unit?
A. More than one CSV file of POI’s can be loaded onto the unit as long as all of
the CSV files are loaded at the same time. If one CSV file is loaded to the unit
and then another one is loaded using the POI loader software, the unit will overwrite
the existing POI’s with the ones being loaded by the software. An easy way to work
with this is to put all CSV files onto the same folder on your computer so that they
are all loaded together. This way it is possible to load more than one set of POI’s.
Q. Will POI Loader load other formats like MapSource or GPX files?
A. Currently, the POI Loader only supports CSV files because that is the format
that most data vendors support. POI Loader may support additional formats in the
future.
Q. Does POI Loader support camera direction for speed cameras?
A. No, Since the support CSV file format does not support this data, POI Loader
does not. When additional data formats are added, this feature may be supported.
Q. How can I check for a newer version of POI Loader?
A. Click on POI Loader's System menu (the icon in the top left corner) and choose
"Check for Software Update...". If there is a newer version, the program will give
the option to update to it after viewing its release notes.
